PBS Kids is a wonderful company which brings excellent educational programming to its viewers. Super Why is no exception. Having never seen this particular series before, I was thrilled at the opportunity to watch Jack and the Beanstalk and Other Fairytale Adventures.
Focusing on four well known and popular children’s fairy tales — Jack and the Beanstalk, The Princess and the Pea, The Three Little Pigs, and Little Red Riding Hood — Super Why takes viewers on an adventure within each tale. Each fairytale has its own unique story and adventure where Super Why and the Super Readers come to sort out problems with the viewer's help and aid the characters in learning important lessons.
With bright, colorful, and fun characters, Super Why: Jack and the Beanstalk and Other Fairytale Adventures will appeal to both kids and parents, making it painless and enjoyable to watch together. One aspect that I found particularly appealing is how this program brings reading to life and teaches important skills through easy and fun interaction. Highlighting words as they are being read in the interactive storybook is fantastic and enables children to really focus on what is being read/said as well as the visual aspect of the word itself. The first time I watched this DVD, I was very impressed. The appeal, educational value, and fun are endless.
Geared toward ages 3 to 6, Super Why hits its mark and then some. Both of my children, ages 2 and 7, greatly enjoyed this DVD. As the scenes played out, the characters sang, danced, and read, attention was drawn and held by my children and myself. With a delightful cast of characters such as Alpha Pig with Alphabet Power, Wonder Red with Word Power, Princess Presto with Spelling Power, Super Why with the Power to Read, and most importantly Super YOU with the Power to Help, this is a sure hit.
