DVD Review: Super Comet - After The Impact

Imagine finding out that a comet is coming to earth at a high rate of speed. All attempts to stop it from plummeting to earth have failed, and it will fall from the sky. The fall could possibly end life on the planet as we now know it. This is an event that has happened once more in our history when a comet is said to have landed over sixty-five million years ago causing the extinction of the dinosaurs.

Super Comet: After The Impact, a Discovery Production, follows what would happen if such an event took place. In a half-documentary, half-movie format we go from just days before the comet makes landfall to months after when those left behind move on to make a new world in the face of what could have ended it all.

Comets and asteroids hitting the earth have been fictionalized in a few movies. You can turn on the cable networks and see movies like Deep Impact and Armageddon regularly,  Hollywood-style takes on what might possibly happen someday. This film is not a big Hollywood adventure. It is straight facts. We learn what will happen to the planet and its inhabitants, human and animal, if a comet does make landfall. We see in scary detail the changes the planet will go through step by step, and in the end we see that humanity can pull through and survive such an event.

The DVD itself consists of just the film, which comes in just under ninety minutes in length. No Hollywood names. Just scientists and story as we follow four different sets of people from around the globe as they deal with what happens step by step. We see lives lost and we see stories of survival. The truth is put right there on display for us as we watch our world in peril. The end of the world in this manner really is a popular topic.

Everyone wonders just when the world will come to its end and how. There are many theories and many dates. Some believed the world would end when the millenium hit. Some others named a date in 2005, both of which have long since passed. The next big date I've heard passed around is one in 2012. No matter how the world ends or when, many will speculate about it until it does happen. This movie sets out to show how things can go with an uplifting message that even if it does happen, humanity can go on and survive, even though the dinosaurs did not. It is a definite must have for any science fan to add to their collection.
