DVD Review: Skyline

It's no secret that I'm a huge fan of end of the world type movies. If the world is ending tomorrow, I've watched it and probably memorized most of it by heart. So when I heard about Universal's upcoming release of Skyline, I knew I had to see this movie. A few notable names on this movie are Eric Balfour (Haven, 24), Donald Faison (Scrubs, Clueless), David Zayas (Dexter), Brittany Daniel (Little Man, It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia) and Scottie Thompson (Trauma, Star Trek).

Skyline opens with blue *sunlight* streaming through the closed curtains one morning and then breaks to a birthday weekend in Southern California where a group of friends are enjoying the pool at a hotel along with plenty of parties and music. After a night of partying, the friends fall asleep and wake up when they see the bright blue sunlight streaming through the curtains. Waking up, they realize that it's not sunlight but a type of beacon from alien space ships that draws you toward them if you look at it. As you're drawn outside, you are swept up into alien ships hovering over the city of Los Angeles.

As the city wakes up and more people notice these aliens, the terror starts. The aliens are intent on eliminating everyone and it seems as though they cannot be stopped as helicopters and tanks sent by the government to help are destroyed. There is not only the massive alien ship to deal with but smaller tankers and drones and hydra-like aliens to deal with as well.

This movie is loaded with action including helicopters being blown up in the sky, buildings catching on fire and exploding, cars being squashed by huge aliens and some great hand to hand combat. Despite all the action, there is very little actual gore of the human type. There is definitely violence in the movie but you're not going to see blood spurting all over the place which is greatly appreciated.
