In the latter half of 1989, the brains at Rankin/Bass Productions, Inc. — the very same folks who had produced and released several timeless Christmas classics such as Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer — followed-up their highly successful ThunderCats franchise from several years before by unleashing the SilverHawks upon legions of devoted Saturday morning cartoon viewers across America. In the second part of 2008, Warner Brothers released the first half of the entire SilverHawks television series to DVD; a release which, despite being a barebones affair, succeeded in delighting the show’s now-grown fans.
Three years on, Warner has given those fans (who are just that much older now) that which they’ve been waiting for: SilverHawks - Season One, Volume Two. The 4-Disc set houses the final 33 episodes from this short-lived animated series, and this release is just as barebones as the first volume. That shouldn’t dissuade any devotees from picking up this set, nor should the fact that this is another entry in the Warner Archive Collection (a series of Manufactured-On-Demand DVD-R releases that are available exclusively from WBShop.com.
In this final hoorah for the space-age cybernetic heroes of the 29th Century (we had such great ideas in the ‘80s), the SilverHawks once again run afoul with their arch-nemesis, crime lord Mon*Star (voiced by the great Earl Hammond). This time ‘round, though, the Courageous Commander Stargazer (Bob McFadden) has some new “partly metal, partly real” pals to assist him in his plight, including a SilverHawk who hails from the future! But, no matter how truly silly a height the show may have reached (and it did), the titular star-faring idols were always able to bring us back down to Earth at the end of every episode with a straitlaced message aimed at the “Just Say No!” generation.
