DVD Review: SciQ: The Complete Box Set

SciQ: The Complete Box Set is subtitled "the science of learning (and the learning of science) made fun!" The DVD set was released on May 11 from Smithsonian Networks and Infinity Entertainment Group. SciQ contains four individual volumes and each volume contains three to four episodes. There are a total of 13 episodes which provide five hours and 42 minutes of program.

SciQ is hosted by three teenagers, Paula, Andrew, and Pemma. They compete against each other as they explore different science topics. The program is presented much in the same way that CSI is but from a teen standpoint which makes it appealing to pre-teens and teens. SciQ is a series intended for youths ages nine through 12 that aired originally on the Smithsonian Channel. This set contains all of the episodes that have aired.

Volume one starts with a visit to a school that teaches crime scene investigation and then has episodes on spies, movie, special effects, and the basics of sound and vocals. Volume two contains episodes about life underwater, exploring snow and winter weather, and a fun episode on flight and gravity that discusses flying lawnmowers, race cars, and alternative flight. Volume three has episodes on poop (yes, you read that right), bugs, and explores the present and future of robotics. Volume four contains episodes on the chemistry of food, human performance, and a look into wild wheels.

The kids really click well together and each has a distinctly different personality; together, the group is engaging and fun to watch. While SciQ is intended for preteen viewers, this is a great family science series and should be enjoyed by anyone with a love for science and CSI-style shows. SciQ would also make a great addition to any homeschool science curriculum. There is lots of great information presented here and even adults will have no problem learning something new and interesting.
