DVD Review: Saw II

Saw II is loaded with cringe worthy deaths, masterminded by the insane “Jigsaw.” Like any true horror film, it doesn’t sell itself on the gore. It’s the gripping plotline, constant guessing, and suspense that keep it moving.

Instead of staying hidden, Jigsaw (Tobin Bell) creates an elaborate set up to capture his victims, which then leads to a stand off with police. Donnie Wahlberg does an incredible job as the detective unknowingly wrapped up in the center of Jigsaw’s latest scheme. The face-to-face moments as Wahlberg’s character is forced to stare directly into the killer’s eyes are as intense as they can be.

Saw II benefits greatly from its cast. Cary Elwes performances stunted the first film. With a larger budget and more elaborate playground, the series continues in fine form. It also nicely wraps up some questions from Saw before the credits role, yet still leaves a small mystery to keep things interesting.

The MPAA handed out an R for this one, and rightfully so. The “strong, grisly violence” note under the rating doesn’t get it done. Even from the perspective of a gore fanatic, the filmmakers truly push some boundaries. The syringe pit is not one you’ll forget for some time.

As with the first film, there are some small plot holes, actually compounded by the larger scope in Saw II. The elaborate scheme to trick everyone involved would require an enormous effort and plenty of expectations that the players involved in Jigsaw’s plans would react a certain way.

Also, while the deaths are gruesome, one requires a monumental amount of stupidity. If you’re stupid enough to get one hand stuck in a death trap, would you actually stick your other hand in? The death is a tough one to watch, but it’s the only moment in the film that makes you sit back and wonder how some people think.

Still, Saw II’s double twist ending is a shocker. It’s gripping and tough to watch, the proper ingredients for a true horror film. The storyline doubles as a crime drama, widening the film’s appeal, and creates enough questions to lead into another sequel. This is a series that will be with us for some time.
