DVD Review: Omen III: The Final Conflict

Armageddon has arrived, and darned if it didn't nearly put me into a state of deep sleep.

Enter Omen Three: The Final Conflict, in which an adult Damien Thorn (Sam Neil), the Anti-Christ, learns that a Christ-child has been born, signaling the second-coming of Jesus Christ, and the elimination of Damien, as per biblical prophesy. Damien isn’t up for being eliminated.

(Spoilers to follow)

Now, if you haven't seen the original film in the series, The Omen, or its sequel, Damien: Omen Two, that's okay. In fact, if I were you, I wouldn't watch either of those films due to the boredom factor. But's let's get you up to speed on the events of this trilogy.

In The Omen, Ambassador Robert Thorn (Gregory Peck) has adopted a baby boy; his wife had given birth, but the child was a still-born, and Thorn doesn't want to put his wife through that misery, so he convinces an orphanage in Rome to let him adopt a boy born at the same time and day has Thorn’s stillborn son. The only problem with the kid is that he is the Anti-Christ of the Book of Revelations, so you can imagine how bad the terrible twos will be. There are a string of grisly deaths with young Damien (Harvey Stephens) at the center. Thorn finally comes to the realization (after being warned repeatedly by a priest) that his child is indeed the son of Satan (Thorn discovers 666, the Mark of the Beast, as a birthmark on the child's head) and sets off to kill the boy using a mystical set of daggers designed to kill the Anti-Christ. Obviously, Thorn fails, which sets the stage of Damien: The Omen Two, pretty much a rehash of the first film, only set seven years after the events of the first film. Young Damien (Jonathan Scott-Taylor) is now 12 and attending a military academy. He's beginning to realize that puberty will probably be a little different for him, considering he was born of a jackal, and jackal puberty is a little tricky.

In Omen 3, Damien is now 32-years-old, and head of the multinational conglomerate, Thorn Industries. It appears that many of Damien's employees know his secret, which would have made for an interesting interview:

Manager: Oh, and one last thing, the boss is the son of Satan.
Job candidate: Hmmm ... say, do you offer comprehensive medical?

We begin at some sort of rock quarry and a guy working the line discovers some loot buried in rocks: seven daggers, or the infamous Daggers of Megiddo, designed for one purpose: to kill the Anti-Christ. The daggers end up in the hands of a group of seven Italian priests who are ready to put an end to Damien Thorn.

Don't forget the (unintentionally) funniest scene of the movie. Damien can make animals do his bidding, so he commands a pack of dogs to kill one of his enemies. The problem with the scene is, they're beagle puppies! This guy is supposed to be suffering a horrible death, but he's being "mauled" by cute little beagles, wagging their tails. At least in the first movie, there was a scary dog - a black bull terrier I think.

Yes, the evil beagles -- look out, I'm being attacked by Snoopy! Noooooooo! (mild growling and tail wagging ensue).
