My Best Friend’s Girl is a romantic comedy starring Dane Cook, Jason Biggs, and Kate Hudson. Dane Cook is Tank, a “professional asshole” as he refers to himself. Tank is hired by guys who have been dumped by their girlfriends to take the girls out on a date and act so rude, lewd, and crude that they’re willing to give the boyfriend another chance. Tank is very good at this job, but when his good friend Justin (Jason Biggs) hires him to date Alexis (Kate Hudson), things get awkward when Alexis and Tank fall for each other.
My Best Friend’s Girl is a somewhat by the numbers romantic comedy, but the combination of Cook, Biggs, and Hudson make it worth a viewing. Cook excels as the jerk Tank, Biggs is funny as the lovesick Justin, with Hudson funny and believable as Alexis, who is wanted by both men and is the first woman to see through Tank’s line of bull. Also look for Alec Baldwin as Tank’s father who steals the scenes he in, as a bigger womanizer than Tank but masquerading as a college professor specializing in women's studies. In this unrated version you get more humor, crude language, and scenes that had to be cut for the theatrical release.
My Best Friend’s Girl is loaded with extras. There are not one but two commentaries; the first is with actor Jason Biggs, writer Jordan Cahan, and producer Gregory Lessans. Here the trio have a great time discussing the filmmaking process, what scenes did and didn’t work, and calling various cast and crew members to get their thoughts on the film, truly a fun commentary to listen to.
The second is with director Howard Deutch which is a bit dull with some long pauses and definitely could have benefitted from a second commentator.
