DVD Review: Major League - Wild Thing Edition - Page 2

Remixed sound is always a pleasure and Major League is a great example, even if it’s the same track used on the original release. The Dolby 5.1 track here is a great mix that really kicks in once the stadium starts to fill. The immersion factor here is outstanding for a movie this old even if the effects are limited to game sequences. The LFE channel does have some minor work, the best example occurring during the classic moment in which Charlie Sheen makes a long walk to the mound with “Wild Thing” blaring through the stadium speakers.

Since the sound and video remain almost exactly the same, the extra features sell this re-release. In addition to the awesome Astroturf cover, My Kinda Team is a wonderful retrospective running 23 minutes. Nearly the entire team is accounted for in new interviews, along with writers and directors. Intermixed is some behind-the-scenes footage. The commentary with the director and producer Chris Chesser fills in any gaps.

A Major League Look at Major League is a fun feature in which current Indians look at the film, the characters, and how the movie affected them. Bob Uecker – Just a Bit Outside spends 13 minutes with the man himself as he divulges numerous stories about the shoot, with intermittent deleted footage. The current Indians also discuss his performance.

An alternate ending is presented with David Ward introducing it and explaining why it was cut. While providing a nice plot twist, it would have set off some significant plot holes. Finally, there’s some older footage of Dennis Haysbert in character as Cerrano taking the viewer on a tour of his locker.

Major League is a movie that cannot be appreciated by viewing it on basic cable. The censors have a field day with this one and although this can provide some extra laughs, it can only be truly understood fully uncut with nothing bleeped out. This is certainly the way to go if your have the urge to watch this one, and while long overdue, it’s nice to see Paramount go the extra mile in the features department.
