From 1974 through 1976 Land of The Lost aired on CBS. The series came from the creative minds of Sid and Marty Krofft (H.R. Pufnstuf, Sigmund and the Sea Monsters, The Lost Saucer). The series followed Marshall (Spencer Milligan), Will (Wesley Eure), and Holly (Kathy Coleman), a family who were on a routine expedition when an earthquake opened a portal and they were transported to a world of dinosaurs.
Over the next three years they had to survive a T. rex nicknamed “Grumpy” and other dinosaurs given cute nicknames by Holly, a race of humanoid/lizard creatures called Sleestaks, and an ape-like people called Pakuni, whose youngest member Cha-ka would befriend the trio and help them navigate the lands dangers as they tried to find a way back home.
The show was geared toward children and is campy to say the least, but this is one of the many Saturday morning shows I watched as a kid. It’s fun to re-watch the show, but it also has cringe-worthy moments which make me ask, “I liked this?” Later this month a movie starring Will Ferrell will be released; it looks interesting and it will be fun to see if the effects make the creatures look better than the Saturday morning show. The movie has potential and hopefully will be a positive for TV shows made into a movie rather than a blemish.
Sadly there’s not much in the extras department. There’s a code to get a certificate for $7.50 off a ticket for the movie which will be released on June 6, 2009. The only extra in the set is listed as a sneak peek at the upcoming movie which has snippets of the film but is really a short (under ten minute) interview with the director of the film Brad Silberling sitting with series creators Sid and Marty Krofft, and asking questions about the creation of the series. The set is also billed as having commentaries with Sid and Marty Krofft, but there were none to be found. A few years back the set was released as individual seasons by another company and those releases were loaded with multiple commentaries on episodes and more. For whatever reason (probably legal) those extras didn’t transfer from those out of print DVDs to the new release.
