DVD Review: Honey

I just watched the movie Honey starring Jessica Alba as the title character. Personally, I can’t imagine calling anyone by the name Honey without laughing or feeling like it’s a pet name.

At any rate, the film starts off with Honey as a bartender. With her best friend's support, she quits her job to become a dancer. It doesn’t take long for Honey to be discovered by Michael, a hot shot producer who gets her the contacts she needs to make it big as a choreographer. Everything goes smoothly for a while, until Honey cancels attending her best friend’s party for a meeting with Michael, which she later discovers to be a party. Not only is her friendship with her best friend shaken, but Michael makes a move on Honey and gets mad when she resists him. He fires her the next day, letting down the kids Honey had gathered from the street to dance in the video. Even though she has no money, Honey still wants to get the kids off the streets and plans to raise money to open a dance studio. While she organizes a dance benefit, Michael’s big client Missy Elliot demands that Honey be the choreographer for her video and Michael comes begging to Honey. She declines his offer to buy her the studio and pulls off a successful event to raise money for the dance studio herself.

This movie’s advertisement indicated that there would be a lot of dancing in the movie, but what it didn’t indicate was how teenage-oriented the movie was. I expected to find a more complicated twist but Honey was all too predictable – I knew that the kids on the streets would get into trouble and Honey would try to help them, I knew that her boss would hit on her and I knew that there would be a happy ending. I also didn’t think that the choreography for the dance benefit was good but the crowd was shown clapping over-enthusiastically. Although the film featured Missy Elliot only for a few seconds, those were the seconds that I enjoyed the most. I don’t think this movie is a big hit (except maybe with men), but it does show you the struggle that dancers go through to make it big, which is something slightly original. I give this movie a 3 out of 5.
