What would you do if you woke up one morning and you could fly? What if you could heal any wound? What would you do with those powers? These are the questions that plague the characters on the NBC show Heroes.
The first season of Heroes arrived on DVD in a seven-disc collection on August 23. Heroes follows the stories of a diverse group of people who have developed powers and abilities described by one of the characters as the next step in human evolution.
The show itself plays like a modern day movie serial of the 1930s and 1940s. Each of the episodes ends in a cliffhanger and leaves the audience in suspense, anticipating the next episode and wondering whether their Heroes will make it out of the jam they’re in.
The story of Heroes doesn’t revolve around a leather-clad group of mutants or spandex-wearing crime fighters. The plots of the first three episodes deal with how the characters react to their newfound abilities and what changes those abilities cause in their lives. They quickly learn that their lives only get more complicated with these abilities and that the world doesn’t suddenly turn into a comic book fantasy.
Claire, a high school cheerleader from Odessa, Texas, can heal any wound she suffers. But she’s more concerned with her social status being affected by this new development and dating the quarterback than trying to do anything productive with her powers. Matt, a down on his luck policeman, hears the thoughts of the people around him. However, he isn’t sure whether this ability is a blessing or a curse because he hears everything from the drunken musings of people in a bar to the bitter anger his increasingly estranged wife has for him.
Hiro is the Japanese businessman with the power to stop time and teleport from place to place. He is easily the heart of the show with his enthusiastic outbursts about being able to teleport just like on Star Trek and his proclamations about heroes not doing things for personal gain. An inadvertent trip a month into the future grants him a vision of the destruction of New York City and drives him to make his way to America to find help to stop the impending disaster.
The other characters in the show include Peter, whose powers are unclear at the beginning of the season; Nathan, the politician with the ability to fly; Isaac Mendez, the man who can paint the future; and the mysterious Sylar, who kills other heroes to steal their powers.

Good review. I just bought the show on DVD and can't recommend it enough. The cliffhangers kill me. So I'm not watching this season until I have a full arc recorded. Then I'm gonna sit down and watch it straight through.

I've had a lot of people recommend Heroes to me; I may have to break down and shell out for the first season. Great review!
