DVD Review: Hellboy II: The Golden Army 3-Disc Special Edition - Page 3

“Set Visits” is a collection of short documentaries from different sets that are used in the film. We watch del Toro direct and how things are done. There’s rarely an explanation to what’s going on. It’s more like you’re standing in the back just watching how different scenes were filmed.

The “Troll Market Tour” was an expected special feature. After I came out of the theater I said, “They’ve got to have some sort of special feature on the DVD explaining how they thought that place up.” Well, here it is. For only 12 minutes this documentary goes surprisingly in-depth on the creation and usage of the Troll Market set. It’s fascinating to learn how and why del Toro designed each and ever set piece the way he did. There is a tremendous amount of detail that went into places that were either seen for a split second on screen or not even at all.

The “Zinco Epilougue” is an animated piece that didn’t really fit with the overall story. Hellboy fanboys will probably be able to tell me what significance this story has, but for the casual viewer there’s not much here at all.

The big mac daddy of all the special features is "Hellboy: In Service of the Demon." Clocking in at over 154 minutes this is in depth and exhaustive look at the making of Hellboy II. Everything you could ever want to know about the film can be found here.

Ending Thoughts

Hellboy II is an extremely fun ride through the paranormal world. It’s much better than the first movie. Whether you’re a fan of the franchise or just looking for a fun movie to watch Hellboy II is your answer. It’s like traveling around in a wonderland. Del Toro’s imagination is nothing short of genius, and here he lets it all go.

But, what really puts this set over the top is the extereme attention to detail that is paid to the special features. Every special feature (except the second commentary) reveal very interesting information about Hellboy as a character and how the movie was made.

any idea if this is the only release, or are they going to release an extended version in six months like they did with the last one?
