My copy of Hannah Montana: Pop Star Profile showed up at a perfect time — just before a six-hour road trip. So, I can honestly say that I have just spent the weekend with Hannah Montana, Teen Pop Star.
For those of you who don't have children under thirteen, let me introduce you to Ms. Montana. Miley Cyrus (daughter of the Achy-Breaky man himself, Billy Ray Cyrus) plays Miley Stewart, a typical teenage girl attending a typical high school, who moonlights as Hannah Montana, teen pop star. Mr. Achy-Breaky plays (surprise, surprise) her father, Robbie Ray Stewart, who is a former musician himself. Miley has decided that being an ultra-famous pop star shouldn't keep her from having a normal life, so she wears a disguise as Hannah — a blonde wig. That keeps everyone from finding out who she really is. Hey, if a pair of glasses worked for Clark Kent for so many years, why can't a blonde wig work for a teenage girl? Of course, hijinks ensue when her secret life as Hannah interferes with her normal life as Miley, and there you have the plot of 80-90% of all Hannah Montana episodes.
There are four episodes on this DVD, each a part of the Miley Stewart/Jake Ryan saga. Jake is a famous teen actor who wants to go to a regular high school, but apparently doesn't own a blonde wig. He lets everyone know exactly who he is, and is treated as a star — which Miley hates. The four episodes trace their relationship from the very beginning (Jake likes Miley, she hates him) to the end (Miley finally likes Jake, he's gotten tired of waiting for her). It doesn't include the recent episode in which Miley tells Jake that she's Hannah, so don't get your hopes up there.
But the episodes teach the kids something important, if they actually listen to it. Hannah Montana is about knowing who your real friends are, being true to yourself (even when you're living a double life), and looking beyond how people act to see how they really are. It's about family — even when the family is completely nuts. And there are some lines that only the parents will get, so it's worth watching with your kids once.
