DVD Review: Frankenstein Conquers the World - Page 3

A nice touch is addition of a comparison from the Japanese version to the eventual US translation. Though the US clips are all presented in a cropped 4:3 frame, there's significant new footage/alternate angles in the two scenes shown. Outtakes are extended footage of miniature tanks rolling down a hill, and two failed shots (one of which has the tanks cannon falling off the model).

Additional extras include a commentary from Sadamasa Arikawa, though some fans will know him as Teisho Arikawa. He passed away in 2005, and this commentary was recorded not long before that apparently. As special effects photography director, he divulges a number of details on the process, and deeply appreciates the work of those working aside him throughout the production. Additional pieces include some trailers for this and other related Toho movies along with a photo gallery.

The only complaint on the presentation is the music. Upon entering any menu, you’re treated to the film’s theme from the start. If you’re browsing chapters, selecting audio, looking around the features menu, etc., you get the music. Keep the volume muted until you find what you’re looking for.
