Doctor Who is a show about the travels of a mysterious time traveler known only as the Doctor. He moves about in his space/time vehicle (known as TARDIS) exploring, righting wrongs, fighting evil, and getting in and out of trouble in his own unique way. He is currently on his tenth incarnation. The Doctor has the ability to regenerate when critically injured. He’s done this nine times since his first appearance back in 1963, making Doctor Who the longest running sci-fi series of all time.
The fourth series starts with its third Christmas special which actually airs on Christmas Day on BBC1. This year had Kylie Minogue in a guest star role, the series then starts with the Doctor gaining a new companion – Donna Noble who was in the 2007 Christmas Special – “The Runaway Bride.”
When we last saw Donna she was a shrill, shrew-type of woman, since declining the Doctor’s offer to travel she’s regretted it and has been looking for him ever since. The duo then start off on a series of adventures including traveling to Pompeii, the Doctor correcting a mistake he made with the Ood from Series 2, the return of the foes the Sontarans (along with last series companion Martha Jones returning for a few episodes) the introduction of “The Doctor’s Daughter” (no spoilers, watch the episode for that explanation) a murder/mystery with Agatha Christie. Speaking of spoilers the next two episodes introduces Professor River Song who has a connection to the Doctor several years in his future, she might be a girlfriend, and she might be his wife. When the Doctor presses her for information she always smiles at him and says “Spoilers” which could be a nod to the fans, but hopefully we’ll see her return in upcoming adventures. Then the Doctor has a solo adventure on a train with a creature that’s taking over the other passenger’s bodies. There’s a great alternate reality episode which shows what happens if Donna never met the Doctor and he actually dies during the events of “The Runaway Bride” Donna must then work with former companion Rose Tyler to ensure that the meeting does occur.
Speaking of Rose she makes appearance throughout several episodes trying to warn the Doctor of impending doom. This leads into the two part season finale which brings all the companions of the past four years together and classic companion Sarah Jane Smith to take on perennial baddies the Daleks and features the return of the Daleks creator Davros. The final two episodes pack a lot in for the Doctor including a “near-regeneration” a new Doctor (go watch the episodes, no spoilers here) and an ending with Rose that fans wanted to see.
