Doctor Who Season Three continues the journey of the Doctor on board the Tardis. The Doctor finds himself dealing with the aftermath of losing his companion of the previous two seasons. In the process of this journey he learns he may not be the last of the Time Lords after all.
Season three picks up where season two ended, with the Doctor finding a bride materializing in the Tardis. "Doctor Who and The Runaway Bride" is the 2006 Christmas special that begins the six-DVD set. "Smith and Jones" follows up the Christmas special as the season’s regular premiere episode and introduces the Doctor’s newest companion, Martha Jones.
The Doctor continues to battle threats to humanity in the past, present, and future with only his wits and his sonic screwdriver. As he journeys in and out of the present day, the viewer learns there is someone plotting behind the scenes against the Doctor and using Martha’s family to gather information on him and his newest companion. In addition to this plot thread, the Doctor continues to deal with the loss of Rose Tyler just as Martha deals with living in her shadow. The characters dealing with this loss is one of the show’s strengths. We can all empathize with losing someone we care for and being the new person in someone’s life. This realistic portrayal only strengthens the viewer’s ability to identify with the characters, whether they are alien or not.
David Tennant’s portrayal of the Doctor continues to develop. Tennant gets the chance to stretch his acting abilities as the Doctor when the character becomes human in the two-part “Family of Blood” arc. I enjoyed seeing the Doctor as an ordinary man forced to make an extraordinary decision, a theme common to the show but not one that the main character usually faces himself. Tennant also continues to give fans insight into the shows with his self-produced video diaries that are included on the disks.
