DVD Review: Day of the Dead - Page 2

Being almost totally separate from its 1985 counterpart works well for this re-imagining as, for me, it made it much easier to swallow. But the film literally falls in on itself during its third act. The film is, surprisingly, so engrossing and the action so well shot up until the last 20 minutes that its finale seems so half-assed and forgettable it simply can’t be written off as a “forgettable error” on the filmmakers’ parts. The film’s final act is so mindlessly insipid that it nearly spoiled the entire hour and ten minutes before it with doing very little besides changing the tone of the picture. Without spoiling anything, it seems as though director Miner and screenwriter Jeffrey Reddick attempted to hark back to the original Day… while also updating the idea but, in the process, failed and nearly ruined the entire run of film before it.

Even with its lackluster final act, Day of the Dead (2008) is a harmless way to kill an hour and a half. This brainless remake doesn’t begin to compare to the original, but for 87 minutes of mindless gore and zombies, you could do a heck of a lot worse.
