All good things must come to an end, even for demon-fighting sister witches. I have to say that I came into the Charmed phenomenon rather late in the game. But I caught up through reruns on syndication, wishing that there were DVD sets I could pick up and watch at my leisure.
A few years ago, that wish came true and CBS/Paramount wasted no time in catching up (which meant no special features on any of the sets). A little more than a year after the finale, the last season his has hit the stores.
Charmed – The Final Season was not the best in the show’s history. It begins with the total destruction of The Manor and the sisters assuming new identities in order to live normal lives. Soon, however, the urge to live up to their magical nature overcomes their desire to not fight demons every week, and they reclaim their destiny as The Charmed Ones.
Then a new witch is introduced. Billie, played by 8 Simple Rules’ Kaley Cuoco, is a witch/college student who hooks up with the sisters to learn as much as she can about her powers, the craft, and to find her long lost sister. It turns out with that quest comes a new Big Bad to fight, as well as the ultimate power that could destroy everything.
But never fear, it all works out in the end with a finale that brings everyone together, generations from the past and future, and ties everything up in a nice little bow. I thought that the writers could do better than that, but seeing as this is (as you will learn in the documentary in the bonus features) a show about family first, demons second, we get a happy ending.
While this is the last of the DVD complete season sets, it is the only one to have bonus features included (conveniently located on the last disc.) In addition to cast and crew commentaries strategically placed here and there throughout the set (three in total), Charmed - The Final Season has some interesting featurettes that make up for the lack of special features on the previous season sets:
