Charmed: The Complete Second Season
Ahhh...the stories that Aaron Spelling's casting couch could tell! This guy has built a career out of writing appealing stories to both men and women, and filling them up with hot, large breasted women. Be it Beverly Hills 90210, Models Inc. or most of the over 200 projects he has produced over the years, he's always made programs that would appeal to the women on the empowerment level while providing the eye-candy to get the guys to watch along with their girlfriends. Truly, Aaron Spelling gets it.
With Charmed, he's seemingly hit a home run with a half-baked idea. The premise is that there are three witches here in today's world. There's Prue (Shannen Doherty), who is the frigid yet responsible witch. She's raised her sisters basically on her own, and is the "leader" of the three witches. There's Piper (Holly Marie Combs). She's the ugly duckling of the bunch. She eventually takes over the family leadership role in later seasons, but here in Season Two, she is somewhat lost with who she is and is beginning to understand her powers. Finally, there's Phoebe (Alyssa Milano). She's the irresponsible slutly one that is reckless and generally is in trouble on all levels. In the second season, the "power of three" as they are known begin grasping their powers as they are steadily attacked by an army of Demons intent on capturing their powers and taking over the world.
OK...I understand that the premise is kind of ridiculous. Yet, it's a very appealing show. In fact, as someone that has watched Charmed throughout its entire run, I'm inclined to say that Season Two is the show’s best season. An episode like "Chick Flick," with a premise has been done before ("The Halliwell sisters battle a demon who is bringing horror film characters to life" - didn't we see that in Last Action Hero?), is still entertaining on many levels. For the women watching this show, it clearly shows "girl power" in its highest form...maybe ever. And for the guys...well...there's lots of footage of the girls running around.
