If you’ve seen Hannah Montana, Cheetah Girls, or High School Musical, there is nothing new to see in Camp Rock. If you have seen those though, you most likely have children who are the prime target audience for Camp Rock and you already know it is coming out with a new Extended Rock Star Edition. It’s been in all the commercials. I know; I have a seven-year-old daughter who practically tore my hand off when my review copy came in the mail.
The movie is the standard Cinderella-style story that Disney does well. Teen girl Mitchie (next Disney singing sensation Demi Lovato) wants to go to Camp Rock for the summer but her family can’t afford to send her. Her mom (Maria Canals-Barrera) gets the catering job for the whole camp and is able to get Mitchie in for cheap.
There are strings; Mitchie has to help in the kitchens but she readily agrees to that. When she gets the opportunity to join the hip girls' group led by Tess Tyler (Meaghan Jette Martin), Mitchie lies about her family connections, painting a picture of a rich and powerful mother.
Mixed in is the innocent love interest. Shane Gray (Joe Jonas) is the bad boy singer of Connect 3 shipped off to camp by his band mates (the other two Jonas Brothers) to get straight. Shane’s uncle, Brown Cesario (Daniel Fathers), runs the camp and steals the scene every time he is on the screen.
Shane overhears Mitchie singing a snippet of a song she wrote, falling head over heels, but he misses finding out who was singing. Despite searching all over camp, he cannot find his mystery singer. Meanwhile, Shane likes that Mitchie is so honest and straight with him.
Eventually, Mitchie gets caught in her lie, Shane gets mad, she gets shunned, but in true Disney fashion, it all gets worked out in the end and everyone sings a song.
