When a young hitchhiker named Bo (Victor Rasuk) shows up when the ladies are stuck on Utah's salt flats, he not only helps them fix a flat tire, but tells his own story of his search for his father as they drive west. When he leaves, he even gives the ladies his iPod. Really, how safe is it for three women in the middle of nowhere to pick up a hitchhiker and how many are as nice and good looking as Bo?
There is something forced about this film. A road trip movie starring Jessica Lange, Kathy Bates and Joan Allen could be a real winner, but Bonneville tries to make too many good things happen to make the premise feel all that realistic. Lange is a wonderfully talented actress and does her best to express the grief Arvilla is feeling over the loss of her husband, but those emotions get lost in the kind of goofy slapstick that pervades the film.
Still, with a cast this good many middle-aged filmgoers will probably still enjoy this road trip Bonneville's basic themes of friendship and coping with the loss of a loved one.
The Bonneville DVD is presented in widescreen format. The audio is presented in Dolby Digital 5.1 surround sound with English and Spanish subtitles.
The Bonneville DVD also includes a standard "Making of" featurette which includes interviews with Jessica Lange, Kathy Bates, Joan Allen and director Christopher N. Rowley as well as other members of the crew. Also included are deleted scenes and bloopers as well as two alternate endings and the theatrical trailer. There is also a promo for The Red Hat Society, which is a group of women who meet for tea wearing red hats and purple dresses.
