Among Dark Knight fans, Batman Beyond is a source of controversy.
It takes place at least 40 years after the current adventures of Batman and about 20 years after Bruce Wayne retired from his role as Gotham’s protector.
Enter troubled teen Terry McGinnis, whose father is murdered by the man who took over Wayne's company. He stumbles upon the Batcave and in turn, discovers an elderly Wayne and the secret behind the Batman. Cape and cowl are passed on to McGinnis, creating a new hero for a troubled future Gotham.
Many die-hard Batman fans aren’t happy with this series because it deviates from the traditional story with Wayne behind the mask. I, however, love it.
You still have Kevin Conroy (the original man behind Batman: The Animated Series) as the voice of Bruce Wayne, who is now mentoring a new Batman. Throughout the series, we learn the fate of most of Batman’s allies and enemies, which builds up to a climax in the movie, Batman Beyond: Return of The Joker.
Which brings us to season three, the final in the series. These episodes build upon the movie’s momentum with stand-out episodes like “Out of the Past,” in which we see the return of Talia, a former love interest and the daughter of one of his greatest foes, Ras Al Guhl. She shows up on Bruce's birthday with an offer he finds hard to refuse: run away with her to take a turn in the Lazarus Pits and join her philanthropic efforts with new youthful vigor.
But is it really Talia?
Another season highlight is “The Call: Parts I and II.” These episodes pave the way for the premier of the Justice League series, as Leaguers try to recruit Batman into the fold. They also mark the return of Zeta, Ink, and Big Time, which add to a season that’s highly enjoyable.
