This DVD is the supplemental bonus DVD that comes with Charlie Wildish’s Inside Bassai Dai DVD. The DVD 10 Kicking Tips is not a “how-to” video on kicking, and it assumes that you already know the basic kicks taught in Karate, Tae Kwon Do, and Tang Soo Do. What Wildish does is focus on what he considers to be the top 10 mistakes that most beginner and intermediate martial art students make. Or, as he puts it, the advanced levels are more about refining the basic techniques which is what he tries to do in this DVD.
Examples include a lesson on developing flexibility in the lower back, the notion of simultaneous stretching and compression, and looking at most kicks through the metaphor of a whip. All of the lessons are explained clearly and easily practiced at home without equipment. Wildish even moves away from the aforenoted traditional martial arts by giving the viewer a lesson on how to perform a Thai style shin kick. Of note here is how he teaches that the mechanics of a shin kick are different from the traditional roundhouse kick. That is, the former has the knee pointing past the target with the leg swinging more like a club, while the latter generally has the knee pointing at the target with the leg snapping out in a whip-like fashion.
I would definitely recommend this DVD for beginning students in Karate, Tae Kwon Do, and Tang Soo Do. In addition advanced students will certainly find one or two tips with which to refine their kicking techniques. Kickers from other styles will likely be less interested in this video because the kicking techniques of those styles are often different from that of karate. However, open-minded martial artists of other styles might still want to consider adding this DVD to their martial arts library. 10 Kicking Tips is at the Bunkai Jutsu store.
