"The Fearless Vampire Killers" was the 1967 movie where Roman Polanski met his wife Sharon Tate. Polanski directed and performs in this comedy about a professor and his assistant tracking down vampires in Transylvania. The campy comedy still holds up, and the dread of knowing what will happen in the future to both Polanski and Tate gives the movie an edge.
For the redemption, we get the 10th anniversary special edition of "The Shawshank Redemption" which was a theatrical commercial failure, but via video rental and teevee playing has become one of the most popular and successful movies of the last decade. Based on a Stephen King story, the movie stands up to repeated viewings because it is well told, and doesn't rely on stunts, tricks or twists. It's about a guy who is sentenced to living death, shuffling around slowly every day for years while people feed off of his ideas and skills, who gets reborn, oh, crap, it's about zombies and vampires. This two-disc set includes commentary, featurettes and a case of cold beer, because when you has a cold beer while doing the hard work of watching a movie, you feel like a man.
