Part of: New DVDs

The Duke's off for a rest with slanderous allegations of his tired and emotional state, and since they were looking for somebody tired and emotional to fill in, here I am. While he gave me vague directions on what titles to highlight, I probably picked all the titles he didn't think about. That said, do the DVD people put out an absolute pinata of crap and irrelevant rubbish or what? And because the Duke would be disappointed otherwise, here's a gratitious MotherFucker.

So first off is "American Beer", and the only reason is because it is by the same director for "Ginger Snaps Back" which I reviewed this week, and I can't think of why this was released, because it is patently absurb and recursive (a direct to video movie released as a result of a direct to video movie). And there is just no way a bunch of guys would go to the States in search of beer (that the only press quote in the trailer is from a university student newspaper is an indication of the impact of this movie) But from the trailer, apparently USAian women are just gagging for the Canuck.

The real movie the Duke wanted me to highlight I suspect is "The Incredibly Strange Creatures Who Stopped Living and Became Mixed-Up Zombies" and with a title like that, how could you not make a movie? I've not seen it, but it is ranked as one of the best worst movies made to date. My copy of the Psychotronic Encyclopedia says about it: "Look for this unbelievably well-photographed oddity with Carolyn Brandt (the director's wife), Atlas King, and a hypnotic umbrella!" And zombies and dance numbers.

The serious release of the week (and it's a comedy) is "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind" which features Jim Carrey as a loser who loses his girlfriend and gets her back again because she forgot she lost him. And a scantily-clad Kirsten Dunst jumping on a bed in her underpants. And other wierdness from Charlie Kaufman and the fellas who brought you head trips with John Malkovich and a hairy Patricia Arquette.

And then there's some story about a bunch of hippy drug dealers, a gun-toting coke-head and a sleazy lawyer. A friend of mine always complained how crummy the drugs experience was portrayed in movies, and this is a prime example - "Easy Rider". Bummer, man. The book and doc were much better, I much preferred "Werewolves on Wheels".

Then there's the documentary "Super Size Me", which for some reason is being released in several different rating cuts. Again, I haven't seen it, but what about a documentary about fast food would require cuts to make it safe for the kiddies, when it is perfectly legal to take them to MacDonald's and feed them grease filled crap which will either make them fat or lead to a dead-end job?

    an admirable job filling in

    kudos.

though I see a mess of titles starting with Live At The Full Throttle Saloon that do not have band names with them. the Throttle one is Jackyl, I believe.

    What do I win?

uhm, lemme look in the odd smelling cigar box the Duke left me (it smells like hippy crossed with solder, coffee grounds and guiness) ... jeez, looks like the square root of fuck all.

Though, if you can find the easter egg, I might come up with a post card.

Godzilla vs. Giagan, Hedorah, and Mechagodzilla are available seperately as well. You did hit the Gamera collection though. Should note that those discs in that set are the same as the previous release from ADV.

Let me look in the cigar box, hey! there's a secret compartment!

But it's largely empty. No Godzilla DVDs. So until those rubber-suited wearing cos-playing bastards at Toho send me the DVDs, the big guy gets the tiny love (and not the Japanoise school-girl kind either).

It's not Toho's fault! It's the wonderful way Sony manages to promote these movies when they bring them over. Though for the first time, they have actually promoted them in print in a few magazines.

I've been waiting on Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind forever. Rest assured I'll be at Best Buy right after work. My eyes and brains will get a good feast tonight.
