DVD Releases For Feb 15, 2005

Part of: New DVDs

Hey folks

Well, The Duke will be the first to admit something along the lines of how crappy February has been, all being told, with the exception of the Region 2 release of Wimbledon last week, and the 2-disc Oldboy due to hit The Duke's shelves on Monday. You Region 1 folks shouldn't worry, though, since look here, there's a whole buncha stuff to be getting on with, like this shit right here, for example.

Saw

That this remarkable low-budget serial killer number just missed out on The Duke's Best Of 2004 shouldn't dissuade you from checking it out. I ain't gonna say a damn thing about the plot, other than that two fellas wake up in a room, both chained at the ankles to some pipes, and with nothing but a hacksaw for company…

And if you thought Danny Glover was too old for this shit, you better think again, is what.

Young Einstein

One day, The Duke is gonna write a heartfelt ballad concerning the career of Yahoo Serious, although probably it won't be as wonderful as his Kirsten Dunst Ballad. Still, what pathos there is for to mine, man. Following this here film about Einstein invents Rock N Roll and so on, Serious should've been headed for the top of the Comics With Wacky Hair pile. Who knows what happened? Whatever it was, I bet it wasn't as fantastic as this.

Tout Va Bien

A Criterion edition for this masterful collaboration between Jean-Luc Goddard and Jean-Pierre Gorin. Not only does it have Jane Fonda at the height of her activist period, but this also features plenty of Goddard's musings concerning the left and the socialism and so on and so forth. It also wants to try its hand at the old "relationship drama" carry-on's, too, so you get plenty of yacking about the emotions as well as the stuff about labour strikes and so on. Brilliant cover, too.

The Motorcycle Diaries

Everyone seems to be harping on about Walter Salles road movie concerning everyone's favourite Irishman, Che Guevara. (Check the biogs, man, he was green as the Glens of Antrim, is what.) I ain't picked it up yet, and I was going to this very night, until I got sidetracked by The Crow - Salvation, starring Kirsten Dunst, and ended up with that right there instead.

Donnie Darko - Directors Cut

Obviously, for moral reasons, The Duke can't support this Gyllenhall hack, but what I can do is announce that the Directors Cut of his finest couple hours gets flung onto the DVD this week. This has been out over here in the United UK for a couple weeks, and I was hoping maybe you folks would get a better deal in so far as the extras are concerned. You don't though, far as I can tell.

Did anyone else find the scene in Young Einsteing, you know, the one where they put the cats in the pie, to be kind of disturbing?

Duke - I can't recommend Angel enough. Give it a chance to grow on you, and the Whedon will suck you in. It's a different show than Buffy -- a little more mature, darker, richer, complex -- but with the same fantastic/unique blend of genre. Ultra-shame it got cancelled after a great Season 5.

I found Boreanaz to be pretty boring on Buffy, but was surprised at how much I liked him on Angel. Of course, I only started watching when Spike came on board post-Buffy...

I was going to mention the Angel season 5 set, but haven't seen the extras and commentaries, though I'd seen all the eps when they first aired.

This season was pretty scatter-shot since they didn't know if they were going to be cancelled or not, and BtVS had ended. So it is pretty inconsistent. There are a bunch of lines which really don't go anywhere, some tying up of some loose ends.

And .. "you're a little puppet man!" Some really great stand-alone eps, but you could put this season on random play, and for the most part, wouldn't notice much discontinuity. It does have Spike, and some extras from BtVS, and two really scary eps. But it kinda jogs along, mostly marking time. And ends with a "?".

How can one find out when a particular movie is scheduled for release?

The simplest and most obvious way to look for a video release date is through Amazon.

I often forget simple. I somehow thought it wouldn't be on Amazon until release. That worked and I have the info I need. Thanks.

or even a google search along the lines of such-and-such region 1 release or similar.

incidentally, i'm scribbling at this week's post right the hell now, and apologies for the lack of one in the week just past.

I guess I'm going to have to check out Saw. It just keeps looking too fucked up not to give it a shot.

Have Motorcycle Diaries from Netflix, but haven't yet checked it out. Soon. Probably tomorrow. I love the music from the trailer, incidentally. The trailer keeps playing at work on our DVD promo loop thing and I love the damn music. That's all.

Got Donnie Darko Director's Cut. Haven't watched that, either. I suspect I'll hang on to my old, theatrical verison as well. We'll see what I think--I'll try to post a review once I give it a go.

And I second the calls for you to give Angel a go. It never grabbed me as much as Buffy did and I never cared about the characters as much, but the show was still damn entertaining and had its moments. And season five flat-out ruled, far as I'm concerned.

Plus you have to see Wesley's character arc, if nothing else, and Fred is adorable. Oh, and for season five, it involved much Spike hilarity. You can't not partake in that.
