DVD Pick of the Week: 10/4

Part of: DVD Pick of the Week

This week's pick was a no brainer. The must have this week is the Alfred Hitchcock: The Masterpiece Collection. This is a collection consisting of 14 movies and 16 disks. Each film has been remastered, including new anamorphic transfers of some that previously did not have the enhancement, including Psycho.

The package comes in a nice looking box and is accompanied by a 36 page book on the master. There is also a bonus disk that includes the AFI tribute, as well as a few documentaries on Hitchcock and his films.

The set includes: Saboteur (1942), Shadow of a Doubt (1943), Rope (1948), Rear Window (1954), The Trouble With Harry (1955), The Man Who Knew Too Much (1956), Vertigo (1958), Psycho (1960), The Birds (1963), Marnie (1964), Torn Curtain (1966), Topaz (1969), Frenzy (1972), Family Plot (1976).

Some are classics, some are not so, but this set just looks great, it will go well with my box set of the Warner Bros. Hitch films.

Also out this week:

  • Alien Apocalypse. Bruce Campbell, with a side of cheese. This was an entertaining little Sci-Fi original about the Earth's conquest by termites.
  • The Amityville Horror. I didn't care for the original, and liked this even less. You would do well to look elsewhere for your horror fix.
  • Best of Bud Abbott & Lou Costello Vol. 4. The last of the A&C sets, this is a must have to get them all. These are funny movies. It includes the special A&C meets Jerry Seinfeld.
  • Cinderella: Platinum Edition. The next Disney classic to be restored and released from the vault. Must have.
  • Drawn Together: Season 1. The first animated reality show. Outrageous and goofy, but not terribly memorable. I'd forgotten about it until I saw this week's listing.
  • Fangoria Blood Drive II. The second collection of independent short horror films put together by the horror mag. I liked the first set.
  • The Fly: Collector's Edition. The Cronenberg classic gets a new edition with some good looking extras to accompany the film.
  • The Fly II: Special Edition. The not so classic sequel also gets a new edition.
  • The Fog: Special Edition. I have heard the only difference between this and the prior edition is the color of the cover. No thank you.
  • Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers: Limited Edition. Anchor Bay releases a new edition of the fourth outing for Mr. Myers.
  • The Interpreter. This was a good film, lots of tension and some fine performances. The cover art is rather ugly though.
  • Kolchak: The Night Stalker. The short lived X-Files inspiration comes to DVD.
  • The Man with the Screaming Brain. The second dose of Campbell cheese. He wrote and directed, in addition to starring, in this supremely corny outing.
  • Robot Jox. Who can forget this Stuart Gordon helmed battle of giant robots?
  • Star Trek Nemesis: Special Collector's Edition. Not the best of the Trek films, but I still enjoyed it. Here it gets the two disk treatment.
  • Stargate SG-1: Season 8. This enduring series is still going, maybe not as strong, but still very good.
  • The Val Lewton Horror Collection. Classic 40's B horror. This looks great, what else can I say?
  • The Warriors: The Ultimate Director's Cut. I have heard that many don't like the changes made to the film, but I am looking forward to it just the same.
