This week, the film everyone thought would win Best Picture until it didn't get nominated for Best Picture.
Dreamgirls (Two-Disc Showstopper Edition)
Jennifer Hudson got her due for her performance in this, one of last year's best films. Eddie Murphy also turns in a solid, Oscar-nominated performance as Otis Redding/James Brown/Marvin Gaye amalgam James Early Thunder. And Beyonce does not suck, either. Bill Condon writes and directs with his usual panache. Also, and I don't usually notice this sort of thing, the costumes rock. Extras include loads of featurettes and auditions.
Little Children
A powerful film adapted beautifully from the Tom Perotta novel by Perotta himself along with co-screenwriter/director Todd Field (the equally understated-yet-haunting In the Bedroom). Kate Winslett, Patrick Wilson, and Jennifer Connelly all give fantastic performances, but outshining them all are Jackie Earle Haley as a recently released sex offender and Noah Emmerich (giving the film's richest performance) as a self-proclaimed defender of the realm obsessed with tormenting him. Appears to have no special features of which to speak.
Alpha Dog
Our most random cast of the week includes Bruce Willis, Justin Timberlake, Emile Hirsch, Sharon Stone, Shawn Hatosy, Harry Dean Stanton, Dominique Swain, Amanda Seyfried, Alan Thicke, and Lukas Haas, bringing to life this true crime story of one of the youngest men ever on the FBI's most wanted list. Extras include a making-of featurette and a "witness timeline."
Happily N'Ever After
This Shrek wanna-be came and went pretty quickly at the beginning of the year. Now it's arrived on DVD with the typical kid's DVD outlay of featurettes and games.
The Hitcher
Living proof that Sean Bean is the modern-day Rutger Hauer. I can't wait until they remake Blind Fury with him. Extras include over 20 minutes of deleted scenes. Think how much you were spared.
