In the bargain bin DVD releases, Dolores Claiborne is a real winner. Not only do you get the widescreen and extras, but also an explaination of the special effects which make you believe mundane reality is real.
The best Stephen King movies have been the least supernatural — The Shawshank Redemption, Misery, Stand By Me. And he's been involved in a lot, most of them, well, not very good.
Dolores Claiborne features Kathy Bates (from Misery) and Jennifer Jason Leigh in a story which flashes back and forth between various might have been murders in a small town in Maine. Aside from a solar eclipse, there really isn't a lot otherworldly about this movie. What I need to mention about the value of this bargain bin DVD is the commentary track by director Taylor Hackford (which I'm surprised isn't a pseudonym). It is insightful, and really highlights a lot of the craft of filmmaking such as pointing out how they used different film stocks to clarify different time periods.
If you get this for under ten bucks like I did, you will get full value.
