Though somewhat uneven, Guillermo del Toro's Hellboy was one of the more enjoyable summer films of 2004. Though Sony, which distributed the film, has long since greenlit the sequel, details have been scarce until now. In an interview with the director, Empire Online manages to reveal a few plot points:
We tried to do an entire sequel based on the Roger [a homunculus with incredible energy-storing powers created by a scientist] origin story, and found it to be actually very similar to what Hellboy is in the first movie — a conflicted monster. So the sequel will have another BPRD member, Johan the Ectoplasmic Agent.
In addition, Del Toro reveals that he and creator Mike Mignola are already planning not only Hellboy 2, expected in 2006, but "at least" a third movie.
Empire also talked with actress Selma Blair, who portrayed firestarter Liz Sherman in the first film and is expected back for the sequel. Blair has some ideas of her own for Sherman's character arc:
I think it would make sense for Liz to do more. She was a really strong woman in the first one who was restraining herself because she didn't have control over her strength. At the end of the movie she is kind of the unlikely hero. I can only imagine that that lends more strength to her character for a sequel. There'd be no point her stalking around all doom and gloom. She's coming into her strength and I think there's a lot of comedy to be had in that.
With the same creative team attached, the sequel should have plenty more of the killer action sequences and quirky humor that made the first movie such a hit.
