Dancing With The Stars danced its way to high ratings for ABC's line-up earlier this summer, but the end result of the six week made for television dance competition left fans of the new show with much to complain about. Kelly Monaco, one of the stars of the popular ABC daytime soap, General Hospital, won the competition with her partner Alec Mazo. Her win beat out strong contenders and almost sure thing John O'Hurley and partner Charlotte Jorgensen, whom had been quite superb with their performances week after week. Monaco definitely had a weak beginning, and it was only in the last two weeks of the competition that she had pulled her performance up to a higher standard.
The last night of the show, Kelly and her partner earned perfect scores of ten from the judges for their final performance. No one else had earned a ten up to this point from any judge, but all three found it fitting to score her with tens. This is what raised flags for many fans, especially after Kelly's earlier performances. Some screamed of favoritism for the ABC star. Others screaming even more foul, stating the vote had been fixed.
However, in a press conference just last month, ABC stated there had been no playing of favorites. Kelly had won the competition fair and square. One of the people that spoke at the conference even mentioned they weren't aware Monaco was on an ABC based program.
With all the outrage, a possible rematch was mentioned by the network at the press conference, and now that rematch between Monaco and O'Hurley has been set for September. ABC announced on Thursday that a two part special will air on the network. The first part, a 90 minute competition, - has the two couples dancing three different styles - latin, freestyle and ballroom. The decision will then go to the American viewers, with the results announced two nights later. The dance-off episode is set to air on September 20th and the results show will air on the 22nd.
Dancing With The Stars is set to return to ABC for a second season, but no premiere date has been officially set. A separate results show is also being discussed as an addition for next season, but no official word has been set for that either.
