The New York minute review of CSI: NY
I've never watched CSI: Miami except for the last season finale which introduced the new series, but wondered about the limited colour palette, you knew you were in New York because it was all blue, brown and grey.
So, I was wondering if this would be the case with series proper, and so far in the first few minutes, yep. Which, while it distinquishes the series in the franchise, seems to be limiting (and somewhat of an insult to NYC, it isn't monochrome).
So on the upside, we have a really good cast led by Gary Sinise, and the downside, a really cold, dead, colourless New York City (and they already shot this in the 50s as "The Naked City" in black and white). But very "Se7en".
-------
episode conclusion: it is rather unsettling how similar this ep is to "Se7en" both in tone and palette. This could be the solution of the CSI problem of always solving the crime at the end of the hour, because for Sinise's character, there won't be any closure anytime soon. But if you see any brown cardboard boxes, run.

i saw last night's opener. sinise is a definite improvement on caruso uber-melodrama.
the weird special effects bits of gore seemed out of place to me tho (the blood-vesel-bursting-brain, the x-ray in motion broken neck.) it's like they were going for david lynch weird or something.

Well, Sinise is a good addition... but I was disappointed. He began showing those qualities that have made David Caruso the worst television actor in history - overacting. You are also right about the palette (nice word choice by the way), it is all blue and black. After watching CSI twice today (damn you syndication) I realize that the two spin offs are still not as good as the original (vegas).
oh, and death to David Caruso... who makes CSI Miami completely unwatchable.

I have enjoyed NY but agree with fellow bloggers regarding the original (LV) being the best.
There is no comparison to Medical Investigators; a terrible attempt to cash in on someone else's greatness.
I have to disagree though with your attacks on David Caruso. He is great on Miami and NYPD Blue wasn't the same after he left.
