Complicated Women

Every Tuesday this month, pre-code films will be shown on Turner Classic Movies. It kicks off tonight with a documentary based on the book by Mick LaSalle followed by The Divorce with Norma Shearer and Lubitsch's Design For Living (his pre-code classic Trouble in Paradise is available from Criterion). Many of these films aren't available on DVD, so break out the tape (or program your TiVO). It is amazing they haven't been released yet since pre-code films (which were made before the Hayes Code was enforced) are popular at the Roxie & Castro in San Francisco and when they are shown on TCM.

Tuesday, May 13th will feature perhaps the most famous pre-code film, Baby Face (with Barbara Stanwyck and a very young John Wayne), and Ladies They Talk About (with Lyle Talbot father of Salon editor David Talbot). Films on the 20th include I'm No Angel (which is out of print on DVD and features Mae West and Cary Grant) and Shanghai Express . On the 27th, She Done Him Wrong (also with West and Grant) and Morocco.

    These look very cool!
I've been watching the previews and getting more excited.

Ladies that act like real women. Yummy.
