On Blu-ray, There’s Something About Mary is given a fine 1080p transfer with rich colors and black levels that keep in contrast with the image. Granted, it’s not the best Blu-ray transfer in the world, but there are no complaints from me. The main soundtrack here is an English 5.1 DTS-HD Master Lossless Audio which, frankly, doesn’t make very much use of the rear speakers at all. Several other audio options are also on hand: French, Portuguese, Spanish (DTS 5.1), and Thai (DD 2.0) with subtitles available in English (SDH), Portuguese, Spanish, Chinese, Korean, Indonesian, and Thai.
Special features for There’s Something About Mary are aplenty and feature two audio commentaries, a dozen featurettes, outtakes, music videos, and several other items, all of which were available on the previously released SD-DVD versions as far as I can recall. The best feature here is the option to watch Mary in her 119min theatrical glory or in a 130-minute extended cut. I should point out that the menu rams Jonathan Richman’s theme song down your throat until it haunts you in your sleep, so hit “Play” as soon as you humanly can.
The bottom line here: sure, we all found There’s Something About Mary to be funny back in 1998. But after eleven years of seeing the same old shit at the box office (which Mary all but helped to usher in), the movie just isn’t all that funny anymore. Recommended for fans only.
