Blu-ray Review: The Contract - Page 2

The bright spot, like you might expect, is the interaction between Freeman and Cusack. Cusack brings his everyman quality to the film, which is why we love him to begin with. Freeman is an effortless actor, but seems a bit bored with the material.

The Quality

The Blu-ray 1080p, 2.35 widescreen is stunning. Most of the movie is in the forest with trees surrounding the actors. Each and every leaf on the trees is clear, and the deep forest greens are vibrant and seem to jump off the screen. There are numerous shots of the beautiful Northwest vistas that are like actually being there.

Much like the video, the HD 5.1 audio is perfect. Since the movie takes place almost completely in the forest, ambient sounds are peppered throughout the soundtrack flawlessly. Rushing waterfalls, chirping birds, and the occasional echoing gunshot all make you feel like you are there.

The Special Features

There’s a “Picture in Picture” option that allows you to see different behind the scenes footage as the movie is going. But, the behind the scenes information doesn’t gel with what’s being shown on screen at that moment.

Ending Thoughts

I had high hopes for this film, but sadly I was a little disappointed. If you watch the movie just for Cusack and Freeman you’ll be somewhat satisfied, but it’s hard to get over the fact that nothing else is really going on in this movie. The supporting characters, like the FBI agents and Frank’s gang, are flat and dull.

By far the best thing to look at in this movie is the scenery. The Blu-ray really brings out every detail in the lush forests of the Northwest. There are some beautiful scenic shots, but nothing that helps this movie overcome its mediocrity.

I liked the movie. I enjoyed the connection and growth between the main characters, which I thought were well acted. Expecting nothing less from Cusack and Freeman, I got my fill . As a screenwriter, I enjoyed the subtle comedy thrown in. The other characters were of non-consequence, being both dull and flat. Some minor interference or even interaction from the FBI would have upped the action, increasing the tension but the FBI did nothing. Tommy Lee Jones would be motified. Breathtaking cinematography by Dante Spinotti makes you feel part of the hiking experience. Definately worth a view.
