Dreamworks has released the hit 2005 movie Madagascar in the Blu-ray format, and this is a film that is sure to please viewers of all ages. While many movies in the animated children’s genre can be merely average, Madagascar steps above the rest and delivers a very satisfying storyline.
The movie starts out with four animals at New York City’s famous Central Park Zoo. The animals are like any other zoo animals: they perform stunts and are there merely to entertain the crowd. Marty (voiced by Chris Rock) is a zebra who longs to escape his confines and run out into the wild. One night, Marty attempts to leave the zoo and tries to get to the nearest train station to flee.
When the other animals see that Marty has deserted them, they run out to the train station to try to get him, only to run into a plethora of tranquilizer darts. Interest groups against the zoo keeping animals make a case for the animals’ freedom, and they are subsequently released from the zoo. They are thrown onto a boat and unfortunately, their crates fall overboard during the duration of the trip. Luckily for all of them, they wash up on the same beach, which ends up being the island of Madagascar.
The film goes on and depicts the animals’ time spent in the wild, and there are several moments that are flat out funny. The penguins contribute a great deal to the comedic value — after realizing that they weren’t going to Antarctica because of the cold weather, they end up on Madagascar as well. Lots of laughs are guaranteed.
There are several additional features on this disc that make it a worthwhile pickup. I personally enjoyed the Mad-Trivia Pop-Up feature, that details random trivia referring to the scene taking place. Audio commentary with the film’s directors is included, and it is a worthwhile listen for older viewers of the movie. There is a portion of the extras where you can meet the cast, as well as see inside the production of the movie.
