Meryl Streep, Steve Martin, and Alec Baldwin star in a hilarious look at life after the kids have left the nest to begin lives of their own, and fate steps in.
Jane (Streep) is a single mother of three grown children. Having divorced several years ago from Jake (Baldwin), she has made a life for herself and left the past behind — or so she thought. It is when an innocent meeting takes place between Jane and Jake that fate steps in and brings a most complicated twist to everyone’s lives. Jake discovers that he is still in love with Jane and rekindles that love with a rather combustive affair. Adding fuel to the fire is the fact that Jake is married to a much younger woman and Jane has begun to fall for her architect, Adam (Martin). Juggling a relationship can be tricky, but juggling two relationships at once can be downright stressful!
Streep shines in all of her comedic glory in It’s Complicated. A popular and diverse actress, Streep steps into the role of Jane and simply sparkles on screen. Though I am not a huge fan of Baldwin, I do have to say that he does a wonderful job in his portrayal of Jake. The chemistry between Streep and Baldwin is the perfect balance and lends a bit of flair to the movie. Enter Steve Martin. Who doesn’t love the talented and lovable Martin? Caught in the middle of this sudden affair, audiences will melt and feel compassion for Adam as they watch this story play out before their eyes.
Written and directed by Nancy Meyers (Something’s Gotta Give), audiences will revel in this comedic yet compassionate voice for middle-aged women everywhere. Life does not stop after the kids have moved out and the wisdom of age has set in. Rather, a whole new life begins — life, take two. Meyers’ writing, combined with the can’t-miss trio of Streep, Martin, and Baldwin, makes It’s Complicated a true delight to watch again and again.
