Baby Mama, easily one of the most likeable and best romantic comedies of the year, delivers a satisfying and enjoyable screenplay. Kate Holbrook (played by Tina Fey) is a single, successful businesswoman. She realizes that over the course of her entire life, she has devoted a lot of time to work and little time to her personal life or the idea of becoming a mother.
At the age of 37, she realizes that she has a strong desire to explore the world of motherhood. However, after being told that she has a very little chance of actually becoming a mother, she turns to the idea of surrogate motherhood. After paying a hefty amount for her surrogate, she is paired with a ridiculous character and together they combine to form a great comedy duo.
Angie Ostrowski, played by Amy Poehler, is one of the most hilarious characters in this film. Shortly after agreeing to the surrogacy, Angie starts having problems in her relationship with Carl Loomis (played by Dax Shepard), and decides to move in with Kate. Kate and Angie soon show themselves to be distinct opposites, as Angie displays an extroverted personality from the first day.
The storyline is clever and keeps the viewer interested, as the two go about forming a relationship with one another throughout the course of the pregnancy. There are several moments where the viewer cannot help but laugh and enjoy, and the majority of the movie’s comedic value is found in these small moments. The ending of the movie is fairly predictable and brings down the overall value of the movie; a more creative ending would put this one over the top.
The video quality of this Blu-ray disc is very good, as there are few distractions in the picture. The colors are rich but not oversaturated, which makes for a pleasant viewing experience. The audio quality of Baby Mama is fairly average, but it is good enough to deliver the basics. Mostly dialog-driven, there is little apparent use of surround sound in the movie. All in all, the video is very good, and the audio is satisfactory.
The Blu-ray version of the movie features several extras for fans. Commentary is included from the director of Baby Mama, Michael McCullers. In addition, Baby Mama producer Lorne Michaels also provides commentary. Finally, the two main actors, Tina Fey and Amy Poehler, also are included in this section. I enjoyed Fey’s and Poehler’s commentary the best.
All in all, Baby Mama is a fantastic choice for a romantic comedy DVD or Blu-ray.
