*WELCOME TO THE BLOGOSPHERE
Web logs, or blogs, are personal, online journals - and one of the fastest growing trends on the Internet. Web logs are often characterized by their brief entries, typically laced with provocative opinions, and links to other Web sites. With at least 500,000 blogs in the virtual universe, these online journals deal with a wide range of subjects from knitting to political analysis.
While some dismiss Web logs as little more than soapboxes for the self-absorbed, others say blogs are the new, digital form of participatory journalism. Many opinion journalism Web logs, for instance, have helped influence public policy arena and many online readers turned to "war-bloggers" for alternative views and information during the war in Iraq.
Tonight on the NewsHour, media correspondent Terence Smith explores the motivation behind blogging and whether blogs represent the future of journalism.
