It's that time of year. The Golden Globes and Screen Actors Guild awards have come and gone. The Grammys are upon us and before you know it on March 5th the Academy will be honoring some of this year's most critically acclaimed films.
Noticeably lacking from this year's nominees for "Best Film" was the pervasive it factor. While Brokeback Mountain led the pack of nominations with 8 and Crash and Good Night & Good Luck followed with 6, this year's best films, biopics, such as Cinderella Man and Walk the Line were completely snubbed.
I'm all for celebrating talent and hard work, but originality and a uniqueness of vision, I just didn't see it in the Oscar round-up for 2005. Or better yet I didn't feel it. And as is apparent from some of our critics' work below, I am not alone in this sentiment:
Oscars 2006: Crashes, Cleavage, Brokebacks, and Pimps...
Would we have better luck picking the Oscar winners without seeing any of the nominated movies?

These are my picks for the Best and Worst dressed of last night's Oscar telecast. I was a bit disappointed in the fashions last night, there were a few that were stunning (Felicity, Jessica), but for the most part...

78th Oscar Thoughts
The 78th Academy Awards were boring. Jon Stewart looked apprehensive and was a disappointment as a funny man. I expected more edge from him. Next year, maybe they can try Bill Maher. Or Robin Williams. And the Oscars had the...

Oscar 2006: A Final Analysis
The 78th Annual Academy Awards have been complete for just over 24 hours by now, but the effects of Sunday's events have and will continue to resonate in my mind for a long time. All the hype, all the spectacle,...

Documentaries are always hard to see theatrically. Has anyone seen any good docs in theaters aside from those nominated?
I just saw a really good new doc called Favela Rising at a pre-screening at Tia Chucha's Café in Los Angeles.
It's about how Afro-Brazillian hip-hop music transforms this guy's life and sways him away from the drug army. He becomes a leader in one of Rio's worst slums, and attempts to transform other youth's lives with music, as well. He has quite a bit of success, though it's an emotional roller coaster. Anybody that liked City of God or Bus 174 would love this film.
There's some other screenings coming up in big cities, and I heard it's going to get a theatrical release at some point.
I recommend it to everyone: www.favelarising.com
Anybody else seen this?

I haven't seen that one but I agree with the pick of Dillon as the one most deserving of this award for sup. actor.

The awards are too long... I knew that when during the fourth hour Jerry Lewis came out and begged for money.
