Blogcritics House, M.D.Trivia Contest

Part of: Welcome to the End of the Thought Process: House M.D.

For House, M.D. fans, it's the midst of the summer doldrums while impatiently counting down the days to the September 21 season six House, M.D. premiere on FOX (the Official Site is likely to have preview clips and more as the premiere draws nearer). A few tidbits have come out about the new season (but I won't spoil you, except to say that the premiere is feature-length and will start out in Mayfield Psychiatric Hospital, where House admitted himself at the end of season five).

Diversions are always great while waiting for things that seem so far away, so I thought it would be fun to offer this little diversion for my loyal (and new-found) readers. So, without any further ado, it's time for the first-ever "Welcome to the End of the Thought Process House, M.D. Trivia Contest."

NBC/Universal, which produces House, M.D. and their t-shirt licensee, T-Line Design, have provided Blogcritics with 10 beautiful t-shirts to give away. Shown below, they're the real, licensed deal. Of course, the shirts and other House swag (including House's red coffee mug, House's thinking ball (that big red and white tennis ball), and more can also be found at the NBC/Universal store.

Now for the rules:

  • Fill out the entry form.
  • You must answer all five questions on the entry form. I know they're super-tough, but feel free to guess if you don't know. You might just get lucky.
  • Entries must be received by August 23, 2009.
  • Entrants with the 10 highest scores will each receive one House, M.D. t-shirt. Ties will be broken by random drawing.
  • The winners will be drawn on or after August 23, 2009.
  • The winners will be notified by e-mail and in the comments section below.
  • You must be a U.S. resident to enter and over the age of 18. (Apologies to all my international readers.)
  • If you have any questions about the contest, post them in the comments section below (but don't post the answers or give hints!)
  • Please read our privacy policy.

As a bonus (and because I love trivia), I've included some additional just-for-fun questions. No prizes for answering these, but I've tried to make them challenging. Answers to the contest questions and the just-for-fun quiz will be posted on August 24 (42 backwards, which is the number of just-for-fun questions – and also significant to House in what way?)

I've noted some question about what is meant by "artist" in the contest questions. I am referring to artist as in what is commonly meant when talking about artists (i.e. Rembrandt is an artist--and not the answer).

In the question about the shrinking tumors, as long as I know which episodes you're talking about and they're right, and the patient names you don't have to give me the differential or the diagnosis!

Have fun! And don't worry about getting them all right --besides, you have till August 23!

    Great questions, Barbara!

I submitted my entry, even tho' I might have done better with more time, because I won't have much free time between now and the deadline.

I won't have time to work on the quiz, much as I'd love to, but I really wanted to do my best to get one of those great T shirts :)

p.s. I also wondered for a while about your definition of "artist".

Good luck Orange! (and everyone else). I never thought about the use of "artist." I'm a musician (as well as a writer) and I've never called myself an artist, nor has anyone called me one. (Maybe that's more a comment on my skill as a musician, but that's another story). Artist as in art museum!

Barbara - Of course an hour after I submitted my entry, I finally figured out what you were looking for with the artist question. Can you only submit one entry?

Thanks for the clarification although as a musician it never occured to me to use the term "artist" to describe a musiciain.

Too bad for me though...looks like I was right in interpreting your question)

    Great Job!

Umm. I have now submitted and noticed when pressing the "send" button that the time zone was incorrect. Is this a problem? I couldn't change it fast enough:)

    Should be GNT plus 5.

    Sorry:(

Can we submit more than one entry?

  • 18 - rbrown205

    Aug 11, 2009 at 10:45 am

I want to submit 10 of the 11 questions under the question:
"Where have I seen that guy before? Who's the actor and what did he or she play on House?" -

    1. George Washington was a doctor?

David Morse, who played Tritter on House, was Dr Jack Morrison in St. Elsewhere in the eighties, and George Washington in the John Adams mini series in 2008.

    2. Street performer in Billy Jack before he became a DJ -

Howard Hessman played “Howard Johnson” in Billy Jack, and he also played Johnny Fever the DJ in the TV sitcom WKRP in Cincinnati, and in House, he played Henry in Sex Kills.

    3. He orated and ogled in Harry Stone's courtroom -

John Laroquette, who played Gabriel Wozniak in Son of Coma Guy, also played the DA Dan Fielding in the sitcom Night Court.

    4. He played Mel Coolie's brother-in- law in a legendary 1960s comedy -

In the Dick Van Dyke Show, Mel Cooley’s brother in law is Alan Brady, played by the fantastically talented Carl Reiner, who played Eugene Schwartz in Both Sides Now in House.

5.He guided the IMF (and I don't mean International Monetary Fund) long before Tom Cruise got involved. "

Peter Graves played Myron, the clinic patient who needed Viagra in Love Hurts; he also played Phelps in the original TV series Mission Impossible.

    6. Tony Award winning Actress -

Shirley Knight, who played Georgia in Poison on House, and won a Tony Award for her role in the play Kennedy’s Children in 1976.

    7. Mighty Aphrodite "

Mira Sorvino played Cate in Frozen on House; she also won an Oscar for her role in Mighty Aprhodite.

    8. Ironically, she played Sean Connery's sister-in-law in Marnie. -

Diane Baker played Lil Mainwaring in Marnie, she also plays House’s mother, Blythe House, in Daddy’s Boy and Birthmarks. The irony is that House’s bio father is said to look like Sean Connery.

    9. This father and son each guest-starred on House -

John Rubenstein (Dr. Ayersman, the cardiologist in The Mistake) and Michael Weston (Lucas the PI in the second, third and fifth episodes in Season five)

    10. "Vilkomen, bienvenu, velcome…" -

Joel Grey, who played the POTW Dr.Ezra Powell in Informed Consent, also played the master of ceremonies in the movie Cabaret, and sang the song quoted here.

    11. Dual role in an early X-File -
This one has stumped me, since I am not an X-File fan. The only actor I recognize from House and X-Files is Scott Michael Campbell, who played Joe the corrupt policeman in Euphoria I and II, but his role is not described as dual.

rbrown: Thanks for posting your answers. can't verify them until after August 23. As a reminder to all: please don't post your answers for those who want to try the quiz... Hope you're enjoying the diversion :)

Understood!! Not going to answer the quiz with a prize though, leaving them for someone else. A trivia junkie like me can't help but make some kind of contribution to these proceedings - thanks for the opportunity.

BTW, "42" is the lowest level of a deceased patient named Esther's hematocrit in All In. It is also the answer to Life, The Universe, and Everything, according to Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy - the movie in which creator Douglas Adams wanted Hugh Laurie to play Arthur Dent. But Adams deceased before the final casting (which was released in 2005) was made, which might have kept (or postponed) Hugh from becoming House.

rbrown--OK...I have another "number" question for you. Why does House call 613 "the Jewish number" in Who's Your Daddy?

  • 23 - Flo

    Aug 12, 2009 at 10:49 am

613 is not the file number if the sperm donor for Cuddy? She wanted House to give her a medical opinion on genetic or something.

613 is one of the two finalists....is he the Mozart guy or the other? If he is, he is the one that got Cuddy's preference and House says something like "yeah sure the jewish number".

The trivia questions are really hard for me especially that I'm French and I don't have enough american culture references to answer some of them.

For exemple the "Dick Van Dyke Show" never was aired in France (not that I am aware of) so I didn't know who Carl Reiner was before you explained it in your review.

If rbrown is right in his answers, "John Adams" nerver was aired in France either, don't even know there was a movie or a show on this president.

Is there a lot of questions that demands that kind of knowledge? It's gonna be harder for us Europeans if this is the case.

rbrown refers to the movie Hitchhiker's guide to the galaxy, based on Douglas Adam's novel, which is pretty global. But there is quite a bit of pop culture, as there are many, many pop cultural references in House. you are on the right track with 613. But why does House call it "the Jewish number?"

  • 25 - Flo

    Aug 12, 2009 at 12:20 pm

yes I know about the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, I've read the book and seen the movie but the movie "John Adams" and The DVDS, I really don't know.

okay after rewatching the episode, I still had no idea why House said this. I assumed that 613 has to have a specific meaning in the jewish religion and after research I found that the Torah has 613 laws or commendments in it. I'm gonna search for further explanation but am I on the right track again?
