Polygamy gets all sorts of reactions from people. Some consider it to be amoral, some against religion, and others consider it to be the best thing that could have happened to man since the discovery of fire.
The man could just as well be the Pasha of his harem. Two or three women catering to his whims or tired fancies once he is back home could feel like heaven. No one would expect him to do the dishes, baby sit the kids, or mow the lawn.
Household chores would be divided amongst the womenfolk and bed time could be the one activity that would be the highlight of the husband’s day.
However life in a polygamous relationship cannot be all that ideal. Women, by nature, are territorial about their men and hearth, especially in the modern times.
Cat fights, jealous rages, and long sullen silences would probably be frequent causes of stress for the husband. Juggling women would not be an easy activity and add visiting in-laws to the already smoldering cauldron of simmering resentments would surely be too high a price to pay to satisfy an itch with different women.
Whether we are for or against this sort of marriage, the fact is, that if we had polygamous neighbors, we’d all be peering out of lace curtains wondering what kind of life they might be leading. The women would probably call the wives doormats and the men would think of nothing but the polygamist’s sex life! They’d be the talk of the community for years to come.
HBO seems to think along the same lines. Their new show Big Love is about a polygamist living in Utah. Bill Henrickson has three wives living in three adjoining houses. There is a Mormon Prophet, gossiping neighbors, overactive sex lives, and catty politics that could probably give Desperate Housewives a run for its money.

"Big Love" is to Utah's organized polygamy what "Hogan's Heroes" was to World War II.
In Jon Krakauer’s book, "Under the Banner of Heaven," he cites polygamous wives in Colorado City, AZ-UT (dubbed "Juniper Creek" in the series) who insist that pedophilia is rampant within the community. Did Big Love’s producers fail to read Krakauer's book or did they simply choose to ignore it?
I was worried that Big Love might glamorize Utah polygamy and gloss over the misery it creates for women and children. So far I'm relieved that Big Love’s entertainment value is on a par with Hogan's Heroes… Especially for females trapped in organized polygamy by means up to and including death threats. Here's hoping HBO cancels the series before it makes the “shenanigans” of Colorado City/Juniper Creek seem as routine and amusing as the Mafia's drug-peddling and blood-letting.
I can already hear many of you saying, hey Childbride, time to lighten up. It’s only a TV show. Well, girls, picture yourself at age fourteen, being “awarded” (by "Roman Grant") to a fifty-year old man as his fourth or fifth wife. Then picture your fifty-year old “husband” molesting your eleven-year old sister on a regular basis. Your mother knows it’s going on, your community knows it ’s going on, and Roman Grant most definitely knows it’s going on.
That’s the day to day reality upon which Big Love’s seriocomic premise is based.

Polygamy is not the cause of child abuse. Families of more than two adults can be based on love and compassion. Men who abuse women and children are not exlusively polygamous! In fact, the majority of men who abuse women and children are heterosexual and monogamous. Besides the traditional reasons for polygamy (economical reasons in third world countries, etc), consenting adults in current, developed countries are polygamous because they feel it is what they want. It is not polygamy that hurts people, it is bad individuals who hurt people.
Big Love is important to begin to draw back the curtain of stereotyping that is covering polygamy in all its forms.
