Around the Dial: Schedule Juggling, Cancellations, and Pickups, Oh My!

Part of: TV Viewer's Diary

The young television series is already having some shake-ups at the various networks. It is inevitable, each year weak shows will get shuffled around the schedule to try and create some buzz and get a rub from some of the better shows, while others will just be canceled, others still will prove to be a hit and get their episode order increased. Reuters is reporting on a variety of moves from around the dial.

Let's start with the demise of the first new show of the season. NBC's Kidnapped is coming to a close. The producer's have been informed that once shooting wraps on their thirteenth episode, the stages will be closed. The network has agreed to air all of the episodes made, and it will remain in its Wednesday at 10 time slot. Fortunately, enough lead time was given so the creative can wrap up the storyline. I am thankful for small favors, many times these shows will not get that luxury. All too often these shows are told it is over and they get yanked from the schedule, with fans left hanging as to where the story was going. This show concerned the kidnapping of the son of a wealthy couple. I have seen the first two episodes, and so far I am liking it, it is too bad that it won't get to get all too deep, what with the end right around the corner. The series starred Jeremy Sisto, Delroy Lindo, Timothy Hutton, Dana Delaney, and Mykelti Williamson. The second episode ranked at number 67 on the Nielsen rankings.

They minds over at Fox are scrambling to do a little rearranging. First, when they return after the baseball post season, House is moving back to its usual 9:00 time slot and Standoff moves into the 8:00 hole. I don't think this move is ratings related, just that the fans like having House in its original time slot. That isn't their only move, as the struggling Vanished is being moved to 8:00 on Fridays, replacing whatever reruns they have been airing. That tells me that it is not long for this world, usually Friday is where shows go to die. To fill the hole it leaves behind, Justice will be moving from Wednesday's at 9:00, where it followed Bones, to the Monday at 9:00 slot, teaming up with the hit Prison Break. Fox will probably place some random reality show in the Wednesday slot.

Everybody hates chris is a young kids market. I hope we see more of the kids this year. My kids could care less about the parents. They want to see chris rock and kids his age.

Of course, I knew all this would happen as the networks continue to tweak their schedules in search of those ratings.

I still haven't even settled into any of the new shows this season. There have been so many that feature actors whose past works I've admired which then, in my mind, warrants at a least a look or two. But sadly, too few have stuck out enough for me to want care whether they stay or not.

Thanks for the update...at least I know I can drop a few more off the list...
