After weeks of hearing people scream, "I'm going to Hollywood!" they're finally there! AI rolled out their first installment of that yearly tradition that has come to be known as Hollywood Week last night. 175 hopefuls were divided into two big groups and the fun began over a course of two days. Each day, one group went sightseeing while the other faced the judges. The group on the chopping block first had the opportunity to work with two different vocal coaches and choose from a set roster of twelve songs.
I have to admit, Hollywood Week never does a whole lot for me. It seems that each year they show fewer people actually making it to the next round and this year is simply the worst. Day one saw 41 people move on in the competition and viewers last night were introduced to six of those finalists. Pretty lousy ratio if you ask me.
Anyway, the standouts and those worthy of a few precious minutes of television time (at least according to FOX)...
Kellie Pickler was up first with the prerequisite sad story. Her dad's in jail and mom bailed out on her, she's never had a vocal lesson in her life. You get the idea. Kellie's shaky "Hopelessly Devoted To You" was good enough to buy her a bit more time in Hollywood.
Pickler was followed by Patrick Hall, someone that I think has a really unique voice. He did one of those generic songs that everyone knows to hear but you probably can't name it to save your life. It induced a bit of chills though and I was happy to see him advance.
"Hopelessly Devoted To You" seemed to be the song of choice on day one and most clips shown were of people absolutely pulverizing it. The old Olivia Newton John standard did bring a few people good luck though. Sixteen year old Lisa Tucker was dubbed "The best 16 year old ever" by Simon Cowell a few weeks back and the old Grease classic helped her retain that early title.
