Angel falls

Angel, the spinoff from Buffy: The Vampire Slayer, is being cancelled. Five seasons, the show featured the usual Whedon quirky writing but with a more serious tack than Buffy.

Perhaps it's just me, but I rather liked the show. I'm sorry to see it go.

This is the biggest bunch of bullshit I've ever heard. How can they cancel Angel and keep the rest of the crap on the air?

First Firefly now this. I'm pissed off to no end.

Angel was great, but this last season (which we're only just starting to get in the UK) feels a bit uncomfortable - the moving of the gang into the heart of the beast offered a lot of opportunity but so far it's not paying back; we've lost a lot of the tension and all we seem to have in return so far is some snappy suits.

The announcement over the weekend really pissed me off, in part because it was about the only SF-fantasy show of any sort of quality on teevee. In my opinion, the last two seasons of Angel were better than 6&7 of BtVS (with the exception of OMWF). I got my season 3 DVDs last week, and compared to s6 of BtVS, it was more consistent.

The only fortunate thing about the announcement is that the series will get to reach some sort of conclusion. While this season has been less arc-y, so far, even the filler eps have been merely good, with several great episodes (and I think tonight's will be great, just looking at the press photos makes me laugh).

But a year without any Whedon on teevee? What do we do now Buffy?

I'm simultaneously disheartened and intrigued by the news: with a clear end time, I wanna see how they resolve all the omens and portents that been the backbone of Angel's character. Will our hero get to become a Real Boy at last?
