Ashley Argota is just like a normal teenager. She couldn’t wait to watch the presidential debate, she likes the L.A. Lakers, she loves Grey’s Anatomy, she has 700 songs on her iPod, she loves to text, she hates fake people, and she still goes to school.
The only thing different about her is she has her own CD entitled Ashley and is starring in the newest Nickelodeon comedy, True Jackson, VP opposite Keke Palmer. The show has been filming for two months and they have filmed five episodes. Blogcritics interviewed Ashley as well as costars Keke Palmer and Matt Shively.
“True Jackson is a show about a girl named True [Keke Palmer],” Ashley informs me. “She’s fifteen years old and she gets her dream job at a fashion company as vice president to Youth Apparel. We try to navigate our way around the office like it’s high school. There’s cliques and homework. We just plow right through it like fifteen-year-olds would.”
Ashley plays Lulu, True’s best friend and assistant. After watching a bit of the show, Lulu and Ashley’s animated and bubbly personalities seem similar. Like her character, Ashley says, “I’m just a naturally happy person.” She also hopes people like her character.
Keke described the audition process as “fun” and Matt described it as “grueling.” Ashley said waiting for the answer was “torture.” On the process, Ashley said, “I actually auditioned for the show in March. A couple weeks later, I got a call back. And a couple weeks after that, I got another call back. It took a long time. It was about a month until I found out I got testing. I think it was three other girls as Lulu. A couple other people for Ryan [Matt Shively]. Basically, we met Keke and we tested with her. That was on a Friday and so I had to wait a whole weekend to find out I got the job. But I found out I got it Monday morning. I screamed and jumped around the house and called all my friends.”
About the cast, she said, “Everyone is such a huge family here and I love it. We’re all so goofy when we’re recording. Keke and Matt like to play pranks. We have a great time. Keke and I are in school. Anytime we aren’t working, we’re always, always in school. And we go downstairs and rehearse and it’s a lot of fun. It’s magic. I love it here.”
