It was a first for American Idol tonight as the remaining nine contestants tried their hands at classic showtunes.

3. Carrie Underwood - "Hello, Young Lovers" from The King and I
4. Vonzell Solomon - "People" from Funny Girl
5. Anthony Fedorov - "Climb Every Mountain" from The Sound of Music
6. Nikko Smith - "One Hand, One Heart" from West Side Story
7. Anwar Robinson - "If Ever I Would Leave You" from Camelot
8. Bo Bice - "Corner of the Sky" from Pippin
9. Nadia Turner - "As Long As He Needs Me" from Oliver!
Scott: What an absolutely awful night. After a rather sorry round of performances, it is a good bet we won't be seeing the return of the "Musicals" theme again any time soon on AI. The contestants clearly were flailing a bit in the song choice department, but the most bizarre selection was from Bo Bice, who picked a song no one has ever heard from a musical no one has ever heard of. Maybe he really did just close his eyes and pick one, but it was not a strategy that served him well. Bo wasn't great, but he wasn't the only previously strong singer to falter tonight. Carrie Underwood had probably her weakest performance in the finals so far. She did what she could with the song, but there really wasn't that much to be done with it.
Obviously, though, Carrie and Bo aren't going away any time soon. While they weren't at their best tonight, neither was anyone else, with one possible exception: Constantine Maroulis. With a starring role in Rent under his belt, Constantine was the only contestant with the showtunes credentials going into tonight. It was his night to shine, and shine he certainly did, turning in what I would consider the only truly memorable song of the entire show.
ZMethos: I think Bo, while not at the top of his game, did better than most tonight. Although I have to agree that Constantine was the best performer in this evening's competition. I also give a thumbs up to Anwar's performance; he rallied tonight after several weeks of drooping.

Why didn't anyone pick something light and whimsical? If ever there was a theme that lets you show off 'personality', this is it, but everyone picked wailers, it seems.

As usual, Cowell was spot-on when he said they shouldn't let that Seacrest idiot pick the categories.
It was a wasted night for all involved.
re: song choices
All nine should be booted off the show and given hot bleach enemas while forced to listen to their own performances.

Nadia was in the bottom 3 the last TWO weeks, and Anwar was in the BOTTOM 2 last week.
Nadia and Anwar have no following and it will hurt either one of them in the voting, most likely Anwar.
Anthony fans will rally, and he'll also get votes from people who want to see Nadia or Anwar gone, but know they cannot vote someone off.
So, in essence, a vote for Anthony is a vote against Nadia/Anwar.
I personally think Anwar is gone.
Jessica was hailed to have a great voice, but she's gone. Anwar is now hailed to have a great voice, and he'll be gone too.

It was a rather boring show. And considering they weren't given the choice of modern musicals, they probably had to choose songs they weren't all that familiar with. I mean they had a list. I hope they would have picked songs they had heard over ones they hadn't, and it seems several heard them for the first time over the past week.

Tonight blew chunks. Big fat greasy chunks all over my screen. WHO THE HELL HAD THEM PICK BROADWAY STUFF? The only thing funnier is when certain opera singers, who can't sound like anything but opera singers, do the same. Broadway is an art form unto itself, and I have to agree, only Constantine came close. My faves are still the same, and I've got a bone to pick with Paula, the audiences in general. I say take the effing muzzle off of Simon, now. He is the dose of reality these people are still going to need, even the three who are in it till the end. Give me Randy's ear - I've never heard him once describe someone as "pitchy" and be wrong, and Simon's blunt force, and Paula can just get caught in a hit n' run. I agreed with Simon when he said, basically in the form of a joke at Seacrest's expense, that this was a pluperfectly awful choice of category, one that managed to be decidedly unflattering to every singer up there. What's next? Opera arias? Then the big greasy chunks will be on MY side of the TV screen.

Scott or Anthony? I think Anthony needs to go. I agree with Simon, his rendition of that song from "The Sound of Mucus" was "hideous." His performance last night should turn off his 16-year-old-girl fan base. Though he might pick up some votes from the geriatric crowd.
