American Idol - Episode 419a - Mikalah Gets Booted

Well, the Fox Network and the producers of American Idol are going home happy this week, even if one of the remaining finalists is not. Last night's extra show, added after a graphical glitch during Tuesday's performances, pushed the results show to tonight and generated a record-breaking 31.5 million votes from America.

The dismissal drill is old hat by now. Here's the rundown:

Nikko Smith - His fans don't want to lose him again, he was safe for another week.

Constantine Maroulis - The new David Cassidy isn't going away any time soon.

Carrie Underwood - Country music's next big star keeps getting better every week, and America knows it.

Bo Bice - Still the favorite, he proved he could play it mellow this week, and the audience loved it.

Nadia Turner - She took a risk, and--shocker--ended up in the bottom three. The judges love her, but does America?

Jessica Sierra - After last night's show-stopper, she's not going anywhere.

Mikalah Gordon - Her exit has been long overdue, and America has finally caught on. She was in the bottom three.

Scott Savol - Every week he looks like he knows his time is up, but he's underestimating his popularity. Though we don't know by how much...

Anwar Robinson - Everybody's favorite music teacher is in it for the long haul.

Vonzell Solomon - Finally starting to show her stuff, she made it through this round.

Anthony Fedorov - So out of his league it's not even funny. In the bottom three, and rightly so.

With Nadia, Mikalah, and Anthony in the bottom three, it was looking like our prediction (not to mention fervent hope) of Mikalah's expulsion was about to come true.

And, indeed, it did. No more will Mikalah Gordon scar the show with her screeches. Good riddance.

Prediction Scorecard

Both ZMethos and I predicted Mikalah as the loser. I also correctly predicted Anthony's appearance in the bottom three, but no extra points for that.

Scott: 1:2
ZMethos: 2:2

The is but one true American Idol and her name is Kelly. I have not seen the performer in the succeeding AI versions
that has the x-factor like kelly has.
She can out Avril, Avril or tear your heart up, that's our Kelly. If there is a breakout it will be carrie or bo. Time will tell.

I have never been a big fan of Kelly--I honestly do not see the appeal. The only AI album I own is Tamyra Grey's, but I would probably buy an album from either Carrie or Bo whether they win this season or not.

I am so glad Makelia is gone. Man, I was so sick of her reactions and that annoying voice.

"Nadia Turner - She took a risk, and--shocker--ended up in the bottom three. The judges love her, but does America?"

This was no shocker. Nadia was hideous, and even Simon said it was her weakest performance yet.

When Lindsey did bad, she was gone. When Nadia does bad, she ends up in the bottom three, but you think it's a shocker.

I suspect you only find it shocking because Nadia is your favorite.

Objectively the 3 worst were Mikalah, Nadia, and Anthony, and they ended up in the bottom 3.

I thought he said "shocker" sarcastically. I really didn't think she was that bad though. And she's been great up until now. One week shouldn't kill her.

Sometimes I wonder if America is listening with their ears or their eyes. We're almost down to the crunch now. To the people who think that this was the first week that Mikalah did bad, I'm sorry to be the one to tell you that she was never any good. I love her personality, her spunk, her attitude, and the comedian in her, but let's face it, it's a SINGING competition and she just can't sing!

Sure, Anthony is out of the league, but contrary to Simon's belief, he does have sex appeal and moves quite well. It's about time they stopped blowing smoke up for Mikelah--she was awful at every attempt! As for Nadia--she's the whole package. Too bad she picked a song this week that didn't make use of her extraordinady voice, but the showmanship was on. She looked incredible. People should remember her Otis Redding send up and cheer. This girl is the bomb and never boring.

Sorry I have to agree with Debbie that Mikalah has never been very good when it came to what this competition is really about - singing. Her voice drives me nuts but her attitude is awesome! My favorites from the beginning have been Bo and Carrie and I think it will be both of them in the final 2. I really like Anwar as well and hope that he at least makes it to the final 3.

Mikalah was sort of fun, cute, and had an amazzng dose of confidence, but, her voice was painfully bad. I always suspected her mom, who appeared during the last two appearances, was the quintessential stage man, pushing her daughter to sing like Babs. I felt badly for Mikalah. If she would have sung more contemporary songs, I think she may have had more compatibility with her age and voice limitations. But, she simply didn't have a good voice. She strained miserably and after aggressive weeks of singing, her voice just gave out. She may have a decent singing voice if she rests it and gets good training, as well as sticks to a genre which appeals to young people, not grandmothers. I was sad to see her dreams crushed, but, happy she was gone. She never should have been in the finals, in the first place. Singers like Amanda, Melinda, Aloha, Sarah Mathers were all much better singers. I never understood this. It seemed to be indicative of voting flaws in AI, where only kids have the endurance to call endlessly for two straight hours, and adults vote once.
I hope Mikalah gets a sitcom, maybe the NannyII, and I hope she becomes a star, but, not a singing star. She really cannot sing well enough to make a dent in the recording industry. If she went for rock, maybe, because that's all style and looks. But, for serious singing, she really has a bad sounding voice. Nothing worse than hitting high notes and sustaining them flat. PAINFUL.

Break out the best champagne! Mikalah is gone! That was so overdue. Her singing and even her talking were just fingernails on a chalkboard. I wasn't surprised by Anthony in the bottom 3 but I was a little surprised by Nadia. She has been a very solid consistent performer until this week but I also thought the same of Anwar. His performance was really shaky to me. This leads me to believe that there are more teenage girls voting. That theory would leave me to predict Scott's departure before Constantine's, but I digress... In spite of the voting problem this week, I thought everyone really improved dramatically (except you know who-MG). I especially loved Vonzell's performance. It was time for her to show her stuff and she did. But to go out on a limb, I think that Simon is very correct in his prediction of Carrie taking it all. She possesses everything we are looking for. She has a strong solid voice, she has a great personality, and she has the looks of a superstar.

Nadia's near-miss (we don't really know how near, by the way) is the wake-up call nearly every front-runner (in a general sense) has received along the way. See it as a mid-course correction.

I liked Mikalah at first but each performance has been worse than the one before, nad had there been another it might have dropped to William Hung levels and no one wanted to see that shit

I think Mikalah has a wonderful voice, it's just different. Very different. And it's unique. There's nothing wrong with that at all. She's my favorite idol. She just hasn't been picking the right songs. A very good song for her would have been, "Don't Leave Me This Way." I but if she would have stayed another week longer she would have made it much, much farther into the competition.
