American Idol--And Then There Were Two...

The finals show that everyone has been expecting was guaranteed tonight when Vonzell Solomon was booted from the show after last night's performances of three songs each by the final Idol trio. It's great to watch these final couple of episodes every year if for nothing else than the fact that Seacrest and the producers have very little ability to craft hamhanded ways to drag out results shows, and devise crass ways to dupe the Idols into thinking they may or may not be in the bottom three.

Vonzell probably could have gone off as far back as 6 weeks ago or so, or could have made it to the finals and stole the entire thing. I think her downfall was a predictability in her performances that never gave her an opportunity to shine among the other finalists. Too much Whitney Houston, not enough risk taking. Whitney Houston doesn't equal risk taking? Not when she's probably idolized the former diva all her life, and has been singing those songs in front of a mirror since she was 5. The other finalists were able to impress upon the judges and America a certain versatility to their talent. I never felt that Vonzell did this. She will certainly succeed in the music business. If that hack from season 2, Josh Gracin, can have a #1 country single, then Solomon surely can score a recording contract.

As for next week, my money is still on Bo to win the entire thing. Carrie is not even half the performer that Bo is, even though his moxie has reached an annoying level of overdrive with an a capella song last night, and lots of arm raising post-song to soak in the adulation. He's starting to read all of his press clippings. Time to reel it in, Bo.

Next week will include a 1 hour sing-off on Tuesday night, followed by a sure to be grueling and annoying 2 hour finale on Wednesday. I cannot even imagine what in the world they are going to do to fill those 2 hours. Let me guess. First half hour--recap of all of the bad auditions. Second half hour--bios of Bo and Carrie. Third half hour--Ryan and Simon toss homoerotic double entendres at each other. Final half hour--Bo and Carrie stand next to Seacrest as he recaps every bloody song they've sung on the show. Then Bo wins it.

I enjoyed your hypothesis of next weeks AI menu and I believe the two hour finale show will include performances from the final 12. Scott Savol can chew up an entire hour all by his lonesome with his over-inflated ego! Just wake me for the last 15 minutes so I can watch Bo get the status he so obviously deserves!

I'm sorry you didn't like Bo's a cappella song. IMO, his choice to break the mold (which is, I think, a good thing) was a masterstroke in terms of the competition. More than anything else, it was a breathtaking performance that created one of AI's finest moments.
